Founded as a colony of Miletos in the 7th century BC, Kardia became prosperous and influential, but it was destroyed by Lysimachos, who resettled its population in nearby Lysimacheia in 309 BC. The town recovered on a more modest scale, and is still mentioned in AD 1235, when Emperor John III Doukas Vatatzes recovered it from the Latin Empire.
